This short but action-packed whitewater stretch begins just below Weed Dam on the Red River. Generations of whitewater paddlers have gotten their first taste of whitewater boating on this section which has some good challenges, fun play, but long recovery pools between rapids.
The first notable drop appearing about a quarter mile downstream is a ledge pourover that is generally punched down left-of-center and offers opportunities for fun playboating. The run continues with a mix of Class I-II water, including a fun double-drop with quality surf waves, followed by the standout feature: Monastery Falls (also known locally as Alexian or Novitiate Falls), a narrow Class III (class IV at higher flows) slot drop with strong hydraulics and a forgiving pool below.
After some rock-dodge rapids, paddlers reach Ziemer's Falls, a lively Class II+(III) sloping ledge popular with swimmers and the most common take-out for kayakers. Additional Class II drops continue downstream, including the often-overlooked Little Bull Falls and a series of unnamed ledges near the town of Red River. These final features can be fun but may involve access challenges. The river is most commonly enjoyed in warm weather but the spring and fall sometimes offer high water runs for those seeking more challenge.
