Description
Small stream runs in the spring with snow melt, or after heavy rain. First couple of miles below Chazy lake is not worth paddling due to trees in the river. Instead, put-in off the Jerhico road. Stream starts very small. Proceed cautiously because stream-wide strainers are likely. Rapids are easy, class I-II, but fairly continuous. After about 1 mile, stream starts to widen. Soon after, encouter a section with a couple of small drop/slides (class II/III) and fun slide sections. After this, rapids return to continuous class I/II to the Lash road bridge, at approx. 3 miles. Many parties start here, and skip the section above. In this lower section, you will encounter a class III drop, and a second 10 ft, class IV drop, with easier whitewater in between. The class IV drop may be unrunnable at lower water levels. The class IV drop will be found after the river turns away from the road, a little downstream from the Rabideau Rd. bridge. Look for a couple of camps on the right, near where the stream takes a right hand turn. The owners of the camps have so far been very friendly and welcoming of paddlers scouting or carrying on their property. At certain levels, there are some nice play spots on this lower section. Take out at the downstream bridge on Rabideau road. Plattsburgh Area Reaches Ausable (Ausable Chasm) Ausable, E. Branch Ausable, W. Branch (4. High Falls Gorge) Ausable, W. Branch (5.
