Description
This creek gives beginners their first taste of continuous gradient. Great run for the playboats on the lower section. Lots of great playspots open up when this creek is running. The eddies start to disappear QUICK when the water rises. Big Stony is primarily a "bedrock" creek run on the lower section, no real big drops on this run. It is composed of small ledges and slides making for some very FAST water and a fun trip. Several creeks in close proximity make for a great day of creek boating warming up here and continuing to some other runs a step or two up in difficulty. The put in is located at the confluence of Chimney Rock Fork and Big Stony Creek, at the end of state maintenance sign. The parking area is noticeable and on private property. The landowner doesn't mind parking here, but if you should have a chance to talk with him, please do so before you put on the creek. These folks are very, very kind people and you never know when you might need their assistance, so please respect them as you would want anyone to respect you! Takeout is located just upstream of the Rt. 653 bridge, take out on RL. Parking is limited at the old "General Store". Again here, if you can find someone speak with them before setting shuttle. And PLEASE, be DISCREET!! Have the majority of your paddling gear on before you put on, and when changing clothes after taking out, RESPECT our neighbors and their families!! The recent NRA proposal has caused some tensions in the area, so be extra courteous on your trip to Stony Creek.
