Dunckley - Flat Tops Wilderness

Trout Creek- Dunckley Flat Tops wilderness is  high altitude 4 mile run only available at peak runoff usually second and third weeks of June in normal water year. It might run earlier but could have significant snow near put in which may mean road not open. Run is continuous and fast but has no significant drops Take out—-One hour from Steamboat. From town of Oak creek on state road 131 take Old Oak creek west Road 25 approx 5 miles. Make right on State Road 925 and follow 3-4 miles until cross bridge over Trout Creek. Just past bridge there is a turn to the left that can be followed about 1/2 mile to an private property entrance. Leave a vehicle outside the gate at this point or better yet, if you secure permission enter property and leave a few hundred yards inside. Take-Out Elevation: 8200 feet Put in elevation 9200 To reach put in return on 925 and make right back back onto 25 for 1 mile. It will dead end into 132 which is flat tops scenic byway. Go aprox 7 miles until cross over Trout creek. Park vehicle and climb down upstream side to of culvert and put in. First rapid goes through culvert about 100 meters and ends with 3´boof. From here creek is busy with lots of scouting and occasional log jam portage. Expect to progress at no more than 1 mile per hour Ideal flow is in 250 to 500 CFS range. There is no gauge but Fish Creek gauge in Steamboat was fluctuating between 450 and 700 CFS on the date we ran Trout and it was around 300 CFS no named rapids except Culvert Rapid
