Very tough sledding in July in a high water year. You need to portage between all the deadwaters in the upper stretches. We put in on middle deadwater. This second portage is on right. Go south until you hit a logging road and turn east. Keep going straight by the bridge over a stream on the road that branches left (bridge is 200M from intersection). Look for faint overgrown road on left. This leads to a putin. You will need to wade some, but this gradually gets less scratchy and goes over several huge beaver dams until you are in deeper water. You may need to wade some of the scratchy parts where the "rips" are. We found them to be Class I at best. The best campsite I found on Baskahegan Lake was on Norway Point. After the lake we found all the rips that were runnable to be class I.
We had to do some wading. The dam is washed out in Danforth, so the entire former millpond/lake is overgrown with high grass and cattails. The channel wanders over to the right and is mostly clear.
We took out in Danforth and portaged to Grand Lake to continue down the St. Croix.
