Whitewater timing varies with scouting, portages, and group pace. Use as a planning baseline.
Description
Due to it's short length this is usually run in tandem with the West Prong of the Otter or Muddy Creek to increase the paddle time. In addition, by continuing onto the main Otter Creek (past the KY388/Red House Road bridge) an additional 2-3 miles of class II-III whitewater may be gained.
The East Prong of the Otter has very continuous whitewater with numerous play possibilities, and contains some of the steeper drops around Central KY. Dangers in this section include deadfalls, sticky hydraulics at higher levels and low clearance under a driveway bridge that should scouted from East Prong Road when the water levels are very high.
Put in: There are two alternatives for put-ins on the East Fork:
1) To gain the most creek mileage take Peacock Road east from it's intersection with KY388 just north of the Redhouse Grocery. Follow Peacock until it crosses the East Fork of the Otter. Putin at the bridge, taking care to not block the road.
2) For the most popular shuttle (used to run only the steepest section of the East Fork), take KY 388 to East Prong Road about 3 miles north of Redhouse Grocery. East Prong Road follows the East Fork of the Otter until it deadends at the bridge across the East Fork. Please park on the river left side of the bridge as the river right side is private land.
Takeout: There are two main takeouts (although other possibilities exist):
1) Ky 388 bridge across the East Fork of the Otter. This makes for the shortest run of the East Fork of the Otter and is typically used at low to moderate flow levels when runs on other Madison Co. streams are planned.
2) KY 388 bridge across the Main Otter near Boonesboro State Park. This is usually the preferred takeout when water levels are very high and there's no sense in stopping the fun. Use of this take out allows for several miles of the Main Otter to be run in conjunction with the East Fork.
