Run Map
Description
Slate Creek is a small steep tributary flowing into the Sacramento River above Shasta Reservoir. It is easily accessed off I-5 (check above for alerts about the full road closure). Typically one rapid in the middle is portaged, 'Poker Falls'. It has been run, but there is significant pin potential. Although the Delta Fire ravaged this watershed in 2018, with almost 100% tree mortality, as of March 2023 the run had only one wood portage and one sneak due to log jams. Remain vigilant about wood: it will be on the move frequently for many years after the fire. There is a physical gauge on the river left piling on the take-out bridge, which can be seen looking over the downstream side of the bridge. You want it in the green. It has been run in the red but is V+. If below the green mark, it's guaranteed boat abuse.
