Description
Known to have been run, per Texas Whitewater.  Difficulty rating and range of recommended flows are taken from the book. Put-in is approximately 1340' elevation. Take-out is approximately 1170' elevation. Therefore total elevation change is approximately 170'. \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- - All which follows is (slightly edited) from a trip report filed May 12, 2018 by Jon Koch: Class II's throughout the trip (though all need high water to be best in a white water boat), plus a couple of low bridges and rock wall pools built by land owners. If water is running high, there's a class II+ with three separate short drops about a mile or so into the run. Another narrow rapid (just down stream of there) runs down a tree root and around a couple of large rocks that need to be missed, which could create holes in higher water. The river stays narrow for a while before going under a small bridge. _This will have to be portaged when waters are high enough to be fun!_ Another small bridge that allows the water to flow over it exists further past that one, then the river widens, going from deep to shallower narrow areas that will likely have a few good rapids. A couple more wide natural ledges with multiple route options, but (at time of this writing) have a few trees down on river left that would trap and drown you at high levels if the wrong path is chosen. _Scout this!_ _Pay attention for large rocks and exit river right at the first 187 crossing (at around 4 miles). Unless you bring heavy wire cutters you cannot go any farther, as there is a high fence that cannot be portaged around._ You shouldn't have any trouble with parking at the take out, but the park just recently started charging $10 a person even if you're just parking a car there. Land owners are not kind. There is one rope (at a resort upstream of the dam) hanging about a foot above the river at normal levels. You can put in up there, and there are a few nice rapids above the dam (somewhere around 5-6, with 3 of them being really fun!) One old dam around a mile above the dam is dangerous but to river left a trees roots direct the river around the dam and this is a fun 5' slide. The rest are narrow areas between trees where the river drops a little and there is one rock dam with about a 3' drop. Not sure if the dam at the park can be run but the water is deep beneath it and I've seen people jumping from and have swam below it. It shouldn't be penciled because there are a few large rocks that are submerged deep in the pool below it but it might be doable to the right boater. It's a very pretty stretch if you can catch it on a good year when springs are flowing but would best be done in a recreational boat unless water levels are well above normal. Thanks for that report, Jon!
