Located in Hardeeville near the northern reaches of the Savannah River, Becks Ferry offers a public access point with practical amenities for paddlers and boaters. The facility features two launching lanes, courtesy docks, and 21 parking spaces. To reach the ramp, take Road 169 (Old Charleston Road) southwest from I-95, then turn west onto Road 170 (Becks Ferry Road) and continue for 1.7 miles to the parking area.
The Savannah River at this location is a major waterway—a stream order 8 river with an average flow of 12,815 cubic feet per second and a moderate gradient of 2.2 feet per mile. Paddlers should expect a substantial current with moderate velocity (averaging 6.89 feet per second), making this best suited for experienced kayakers and canoeists. The river eventually flows 293 miles to the Atlantic Ocean, offering opportunities for both day trips and extended paddling.
The area provides excellent access to wildlife viewing opportunities, including proximity to Savannah National Wildlife Refuge, a sanctuary established in 1927 that attracts abundant migratory birds and waterfowl. Before launching, be sure to obtain required state licenses and registrations through SCDNR.
