Black's Ford is a well-maintained FWP (Fish, Wildlife & Parks) access point located at the bottom of Bear Trap Canyon on the Madison River near Manhattan, Montana. The facility features a large parking area and a wide, gradual concrete ramp that is easy to navigate for launching kayaks, canoes, and larger boats. This is a popular put-in for wade fishing and whitewater paddling in the scenic Bear Trap Canyon section of the river.
Paddlers should note that Black's Ford serves as an important access point in a stretch of the Madison where boat ramps are limited. Downstream from Black's Ford toward Three Forks, there are only two additional ramps available before reaching Blackbird access at the I-90 bridge near Three Forks—a significant consideration for planning multi-day trips or longer floats. The proximity to Highway 89 and nearby Lee Metcalf Wilderness (Bear Trap unit) makes this a popular jumping-off point for both day paddles and extended river trips in the area.
