Carey Creek is the primary take-out point for Main Salmon River floats, located approximately 30 miles east of Riggins, Idaho. This popular access site features a boat ramp, picnic tables, and toilet facilities, making it convenient for paddlers completing multi-day trips. The ramp is well-suited for kayakers, canoeists, and rafters, though jetboaters also use this site. Note that a tight turn at a nearby bridge crossing limits vehicle and trailer access for boats longer than approximately 25 feet.
The Salmon River at this location is a major waterway—a Class 8 stream draining over 12,600 square miles with an average flow of roughly 13,100 cubic feet per second. The river's significant gradient (averaging 23.1 ft/mile) creates dynamic conditions with Class III rapids such as Vinegar Creek Rapid just upstream. This section is popular for multi-day float trips originating from Corn Creek, 68 miles upstream near Salmon, Idaho.
Spring Bar Campground is available within 10 miles for overnight stays. The site sits within the scenic Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests and provides access to surrounding wilderness areas. Shuttle services are typically available due to the remote location and popularity of this float trip.
