Cedar River Access in La Porte City offers a convenient launch point for paddlers and boaters on the West Fork Cedar River. The site features a gravel boat ramp and carry-down launch, with spacious parking available. The 26-acre facility sits within scenic flood plain forest and provides good access to this section of the Cedar River, which eventually joins the Iowa River before flowing toward the Mississippi.
The stretch downstream from this access is classified as recreational with beginner skill level. The next major access point is 9.5 miles downriver at Edwardsville Access (river mile 16.6). As you paddle downstream, you'll transition from a more suburban setting to an area lined with housing, businesses, and parkland. The West Fork Cedar River supports a healthy fishery including walleye, smallmouth bass, northern pike, and channel catfish, making this access useful for anglers as well as paddlers.
The site offers camping facilities in addition to boat access, making it a good base for longer paddling trips. Plan accordingly if you're paddling between access points, as the 4.1 miles to the next access and 9.5 miles to Edwardsville require sufficient time and experience.
