About This Access Site
The Flambeau River boat ramp near Thornapple provides access to one of Wisconsin's premier paddling destinations, offering excellent routes for kayakers and canoeists of all skill levels. This is one of six established landings along the North Fork, with no access fees and the option to leave your vehicle overnight if you're planning a camping trip. The Flambeau River State Forest borders the North Fork with 14 riverside canoe camps, making this a convenient launch point for multi-day paddling adventures.

Water conditions and paddling character vary significantly depending on river levels and your chosen segment. During medium to high water, the upper segments (FS1 and FS2) offer fun Class II+ rapids interspersed with flatwater paddling, while Segment FS3 provides more challenging terrain including Little Falls (Class IV) and Slough Gundy Rapids (Class II-III) for advanced paddlers. Lower sections and flowage areas are suitable for beginners and recreational paddlers. Numerous alternate access points along Flambeau River Road and at Dairyland reservoir boat landings allow you to customize your trip distance—segments range from 1.4 to 2.6 miles between major access points. Drinking water and toilet facilities are available at designated canoe camp areas; check the camping page for specific locations.
