Rome Access is a BLM-operated boat ramp located near Rome in Malheur County, Oregon, approximately 115 miles southwest of Boise. The ramp sits on the south side of the river, just east of the highway bridge and about 1/8 mile from the road. This is the primary launch point for float trips on the lower Owyhee River and provides easy access to an exceptional multi-day paddling corridor.
From Rome, paddlers typically embark on 4-5 day float trips downstream toward Birch Creek or Leslie Gulch. The lower Owyhee is known for numerous Class III rapids—over a dozen between Rome and Greeley—with three sections (Bulls Eye, Whistling Bird, and Montgomery) that can reach Class IV difficulty at low flows (below 750 cfs). Most rapids are relatively short, though some longer, continuous low-grade sections exist throughout the corridor. Water levels and seasonal flow conditions significantly affect difficulty and navigation.
The site appears to offer parking and basic amenities typical of BLM access areas. Given the remote location and the nature of this float trip, paddlers should check current water conditions, plan accordingly for multi-day trips, and be prepared for the Class III-IV whitewater encountered downstream.
