Spudhouse is a WDFW-managed boat ramp providing access to the Skagit River west of Mount Vernon in Skagit County. Located on the Cottonwood Island Wildlife Area Unit, this primitive launch accommodates motorboats, kayaks, and canoes year-round. The site features limited parking for approximately 6 vehicles and portable restrooms located midway between the ramp and entry gates. Note that overnight and long-term parking are not permitted.
**Access and Conditions:** The ramp is typically open 24/7, though gates may be closed during high water events (when river levels forecast to reach 19 feet or higher) or when debris clearing is necessary. The site is located upstream of the river's north and south forks, offering access to a productive section of the Skagit. Paddlers should be prepared for variable river conditions and check current water levels before launching, as high water can impact both access and paddling safety.
**Nearby Options:** If Spudhouse is closed or unavailable, alternative launches include Hamilton Boat Launch (east on SR-20 near Cape Horn Road, with facilities), Riverfront Park in Sedro-Woolley, and Edgewater Park in Mount Vernon. Paddlers can also explore the nearby Padilla Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, featuring extensive seagrass meadows, tidal flats, and salt marshes downstream.
