Vinegar Creek is a remote, end-of-road boat ramp providing access to the Salmon River in Idaho County. This concrete ramp serves as a primary launch point for jet boat operators heading upriver to remote ranches (Shepp Ranch, James Ranch, and Mackay Bar). The site is located in a scenic area surrounded by the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests and Marshall Mountain Wilderness Study Area.
**Important for Paddlers:** This ramp is challenging and not recommended for average users—4-wheel drive vehicles and a winch are required to launch and retrieve boats safely. Kayakers and canoeists should be aware that the Salmon River at this location is a major river system (Stream Order 8) with an average flow of 13,100 cubic feet per second and a substantial gradient of 23.1 feet per mile, indicating significant whitewater conditions. This site is better suited as a takeout point for downstream float trips rather than an upstream paddling destination.
The remote location at the end of the road means limited services are available. Paddlers should come fully self-sufficient and familiar with the river conditions before attempting access at this site. Jet boat services and outfitter operations are available if you need professional support for river travel.
