Description
StairStep is a technical Class IV rapid characterized by a series of distinct drops and ledges that create complex hydraulics and require precise boat positioning. Paddlers must navigate a tight line between powerful diagonal waves and potentially recirculating holes, with the crux move involving threading between two large rock formations near the bottom of the rapid. Good situational awareness and strong eddy-hopping skills are critical for safely descending this challenging section of the Gauley River.
