Upper Mash is a technical Class IV rapid characterized by a series of powerful, closely-spaced hydraulics and large boulders that create a complex navigation challenge. Paddlers must thread a precise line through multiple offset drops and aggressive hole features, with the primary danger being potential pin spots and the need for quick, precise maneuvering between rock formations. A strong ferry and immediate eddy-hopping skills are critical for safely negotiating this intense section of the Gauley River.
