About This Access Site
Beginners' Hole is a water access point on the Kalama River in Kalama, Cowlitz County, offering basic amenities for paddlers and small boaters. The site features a parking lot with one ADA-accessible parking space and a restroom facility. Note that there are no formal boat ramps or hand launch areas, so access may be limited depending on water levels and your vessel type. Camping is not permitted at this location.

For boaters planning extended trips, be aware that the Pritchards area upstream is considered a better launching point for day floats, with easier access and smoother ramp conditions. If you're paddling downstream toward Kalama's downtown, the marina at the end of the access area has a transient dock available for short-term and multi-day mooring, which significantly shortens the walk to town compared to launching from the main ramp. The section between Pritchards and Modrow Bridge is recommended for calmer floats, while longer trips toward I-5 require early starts and substantial rowing effort.
