The Benton City Recreation Area and Boat Launch serves as the primary access point for the Tapteal Water Trail, a 30+ mile paddling route down the lower Yakima River to Bateman Island. This full-service facility offers ample parking, a concrete boat ramp, year-round restrooms, and drinking water—making it an ideal starting point for kayakers and canoeists. The launch is ideal for beginning downstream floats on what becomes a broader, more substantial western river below this point, especially with additional flow from the Teanaway River.
Paddlers should note that this is primarily a launch point; walk-and-wade access is limited without bushwhacking. Plan for a full-day float to the next major access point, typically requiring 6+ hours depending on fishing pace and current conditions. Winter conditions can make the ramp slippery, so be prepared if water levels are high. The nearby Horse Heaven Hills offers additional hiking and wildlife viewing opportunities for those extending their visit to the area.
