About This Access Site
The Black River boat ramp in Lowville provides public access to a major river system with significant paddling potential. Located at the dam, this improved launch ramp features a parking area and boat ramp suitable for kayakers, canoeists, and motorboats. The site includes a kiosk with historical and ecological information. This section of the Black River is known for excellent fishing opportunities, particularly for trout (brown and rainbow), northern pike, and bullhead, with special fishing access in the bay where Woodhull Creek enters.

The Black River is a major waterway (Stream Order 9) with substantial flow averaging 10,540 cubic feet per second and an average gradient of 1.5 ft/mile. Paddlers should be aware that while this section near Lowville flows steadily, the river's character varies significantly along its 288-mile length. Downstream toward Watertown (approximately 20 miles west), the Black River becomes known for whitewater conditions. This access point is ideal for flat-water paddling and fishing, with the river offering moderate current and stable conditions in this section.

For current conditions, hours of operation, and additional paddling information, consult the Lewis County Black River Canoe Trail Guide and the Lewis County boat launch resources. This is a public access site open for recreational use, making it a solid choice for launching paddling and fishing trips on this significant northern New York waterway.
