About This Access Site
The Black River boat ramp in Lowville provides public access to a major river system with excellent recreational opportunities. This improved launch facility includes a parking area and boat ramp suitable for kayaks, canoes, and motorboats. The site features a kiosk with historical and ecological information and is popular for shore fishing, particularly for northern pike and bullhead.

The Black River in this section is a substantial waterway—a major river system comparable to the Mississippi or Missouri, with an average flow of over 10,500 cubic feet per second and a moderate gradient of 1.5 feet per mile. Paddlers can expect moving water and should be prepared for current. The river also offers excellent fishing for trout species (brown and rainbow trout) in this stretch. Nearby Woodhull Creek confluence creates a bay area with particularly good fishing opportunities.

For paddlers planning a trip, consult the "Lewis County Black River Canoe Trail Guide" for detailed route information and river conditions. This section provides access to a longer paddling corridor that eventually flows toward Watertown and ultimately into Black River Bay and Lake Ontario.
