Deep Bottom provides easy access to the James River, a major waterway in Virginia. The site features two boat ramps for launching kayaks, canoes, and motorized boats. An additional canoe launch is located on the adjacent Four Mile Creek.
The James River is a substantial waterway, stretching over 1,100 miles with an average flow of nearly 13,000 cubic feet per second. Boaters can expect a relatively deep channel and moderate current, with an average gradient of 2 feet per mile. This section of the river is located about 30 miles upriver from the Chesapeake Bay and 11 miles from the city of Richmond.
In addition to the water access, Deep Bottom Park offers picnic facilities and fishing opportunities. The park grounds and boat ramp access are open from dawn to dusk, though specific hours may vary. Paddlers and boaters should exercise caution appropriate for the river's size and flow conditions, and be prepared for changing weather and water levels. Nearby recreation areas like Presquile National Wildlife Refuge and James River National Wildlife Refuge provide additional opportunities for exploration along the James River.
