About This Access Site
Bear Creek Cove offers convenient boat access to Kaw Lake, a 17,000-acre reservoir on the Arkansas River in north central Oklahoma near Ponca City. The campground features a dedicated boat ramp for launching kayaks, canoes, and fishing boats, with 22 campsites available (many with electric hookups and modern amenities). The lake's 168 miles of shoreline and calm reservoir conditions make it ideal for paddlers of all skill levels, and two full-service marinas at McFadden Cove and Pioneer Park provide additional support for longer outings.

The Arkansas River itself is a major waterway (Stream Order 10) with an average flow of about 51,000 cubic feet per second and a moderate gradient. However, from the cove you'll primarily be paddling on the lake's protected waters rather than the river's main current. Before visiting, check water levels and current conditions, as lake levels can fluctuate seasonally. The area is well-known for fishing (catfish, crappie, white bass, and walleye) and offers scenic hiking trails along the eastern shore if you want to combine paddling with other activities.
