The Byllesby Pool boat ramp provides access to the New River, a major Appalachian waterway flowing over 800 miles to the ocean. This launch site is located in Galax, Virginia, near the headwaters of the river.
For paddlers, the New River in this area offers scenic, Class I-II whitewater suitable for canoes and kayaks. The river has an average gradient of 6.3 feet per mile and a typical flow rate over 12,000 cubic feet per second, so boaters should use caution and plan accordingly. Nearby campgrounds like Collins Cove Horse Campground provide overnight options.
Anglers will find good opportunities to target species like flathead catfish, channel catfish, walleye, and smallmouth bass in these waters. The take-out for this section is about one mile above the Byllesby Dam, at a ramp at the end of Route 739 near Riverhill. Boaters should familiarize themselves with the river's character and any dam/waterfall hazards before heading out.
