The Whitethorne boat ramp provides excellent access to the scenic New River in Blacksburg, Virginia. The well-maintained concrete ramp makes it easy to launch kayaks, canoes, and small powerboats. The New River is a major waterway, stretching over 800 miles with an average flow of over 12,000 cubic feet per second. At this location near the headwaters, the river flows at a moderate 5-6 feet per second with a gentle gradient, offering paddlers and boaters expansive flatwater interrupted by only minor riffles.
The boat ramp has limited trailer parking available. Nearby amenities include the Boley Field Group Campground about 10 miles away, which offers reservable campsites. This access point is a popular spot for fishing, with good populations of smallmouth bass and other gamefish found in the river. Boaters and paddlers will find excellent recreational opportunities on this beautiful, historic waterway.
